There’s nothing more satisfying than getting a stove burning properly on the first attempt. Unfortunately, many people struggle with smoky starts, reluctant flames or fires that quickly go out.
At Taylor-Frith, we’ve been helping customers enjoy better fires since the 1930s, and getting the lighting process right makes all the difference.light a stove
Step 1: Start with a Clean Stove
Remove excess ash, leaving a thin layer to help insulate the firebed. Open all air vents fully before lighting.
Step 2: Use Quality Firelighters and Kindling
Build a small stack using:
• Natural firelighters
• Dry kindling
• A couple of kiln-dried logs
Kiln-dried wood lights faster because it contains far less moisture.
Step 3: Let the Fire Build
Allow the kindling to burn strongly before adding larger logs or approved smokeless fuel.
Adding fuel too early can smother the fire

Step 4: Adjust the Air Vents

Once the fire is established, reduce the airflow gradually to maintain an efficient burn.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:light a stove
