For generations, the joy of “bringing coal in” was as much part of winter as wellington boots and thick socks. But no matter how lovingly you choose your fuel, how you store it affects performance just as much as what you burn.
Keep It Dry
The golden rule of fuel storage is simple: keep your coal and logs dry. Damp fuel burns poorly, creating more smoke and less heat, and can even cause damage to your grate or stove over time.
- Coal: Store under cover — a shed, lean-to, or dedicated fuel bunker works wonders.
- Logs: Ideally stacked with airflow around them so that moisture can escape. Keep them off the ground on pallets or a rack to prevent damp rising up.

Seasonal Tips from the Yard
- Rotate your stock so older fuel gets used first.
- Protect kindling and firelighters in sealed containers to keep them easy to light.
- If you have a coal hole or bunker, sweep it out at the end of each season.
